5-Year Career Journey at Q9 PowerSports USA: From Janitor to Technician

Jeremy Kuehni

My 5-Year Journey at Q9 PowerSports USA

For the past five years, I've had the privilege of working at Q9 PowerSports USA, where I've learned invaluable skills about small engines, customer service, and the powersports industry. This is my story of growth, learning, and career development at one of America's leading affordable powersports dealers.

Starting from the Ground Up: Janitor Position

I started my career at Q9 PowerSports USA while still in high school, beginning in the most fundamental role - janitor. My responsibilities included ensuring our shop stayed clean and organized, which encompassed:

  • Cleaning powersports machines for showroom display
  • Maintaining spotless floors throughout the dealership
  • Organizing product displays for customer viewing
  • Keeping the service area clean and safe
  • General facility maintenance and upkeep

Learning Through Observation

Even in this entry-level position, I began my education in the powersports industry. I started learning about the machines by:

  • Studying product information on our website
  • Listening to salespeople make their pitches to customers
  • Understanding the features each machine had to offer
  • Observing customer questions and concerns
  • Learning the differences between various models and brands

This foundation of knowledge would prove invaluable as I advanced in my career.

Advancing to PowerSports Machine Assembler

After proving myself as a reliable janitor, I was promoted to the position of PowerSports machine assembler. This role came with significantly more responsibility and technical skill requirements.

Assembly Responsibilities

My main responsibilities as an assembler included ensuring that all ATVs, dirt bikes, go karts, and scooters that arrived at our dealership were properly and safely assembled in a timely fashion for the showroom floor.

Critical Skills Developed

Working the assembly job on these machines helped me develop crucial technical skills:

Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is a critically important aspect when assembling youth powersports vehicles. Every machine must be perfect before it reaches a customer because safety is paramount. This included:

  • Ensuring all nuts and bolts are properly tightened to specifications
  • Inspecting for possible shipping damage
  • Verifying all safety features function correctly
  • Testing brakes, throttles, and kill switches
  • Confirming proper fluid levels
  • Quality control checks before showroom placement

Technical Knowledge

During my two years as an assembler, I gained hands-on experience with:

  • Engine components and how they work together
  • Electrical systems and wiring
  • Brake systems and adjustments
  • Suspension setup and alignment
  • Carburetor installation and tuning
  • Safety equipment installation

This deep understanding of how powersports machines are built from the ground up would become the foundation for my future roles.

Transition to Sales: Facing New Challenges

After approximately two years as an assembler, I was offered a sales position. This represented a significant career shift that initially made me nervous.

Overcoming Sales Anxiety

Having never worked in a customer service job before, the prospect of direct customer interaction was intimidating. Working on machines and dealing directly with people are two very different skill sets. However, several factors helped me succeed:

Product Knowledge Advantage

A large part of selling youth ATVs, dirt bikes, and other powersports vehicles is knowing them inside and out. Thanks to my assembly experience, I had a very thorough understanding of:

  • How each machine is constructed
  • The features and benefits of different models
  • Common questions and concerns
  • Maintenance requirements and procedures
  • Safety features and how they work
  • Appropriate sizing for different age groups

Growing Confidence

As time moved on and I dealt with more customers, the sales process became significantly easier. Key lessons I learned included:

  • Active listening to understand customer needs
  • Matching customers with appropriate vehicles
  • Explaining technical features in simple terms
  • Building trust through honest recommendations
  • Following up to ensure customer satisfaction

The Q9 PowerSports Training Philosophy

One of the most valuable aspects of working at Q9 PowerSports USA is the company's approach to employee development.

Promotion from Within

Most people who work at Q9 PowerSports have advanced through the same career path that I followed. At one point or another, all the managers, salesmen, and saleswomen were assemblers first.

Why This Training Method Works

I believe this is an excellent way to train employees because:

  • Deep product knowledge: Everyone truly knows the machines inside and out
  • Better customer service: Staff can answer technical questions confidently
  • Authentic expertise: Employees have hands-on experience, not just book learning
  • Problem-solving ability: Understanding how machines work helps diagnose issues
  • Career growth opportunities: Clear advancement path motivates employees

This approach makes helping customers much easier because every team member has genuine expertise with powersports vehicles.

Advancing to Service Technician

After working in sales for about a year, I was looking for more of a daily challenge beyond taking sales orders and helping customers choose vehicles. I took an interest in the service center and began learning repair and maintenance from our experienced technicians.

Technical Support and Service Work

Service work and technical support represent a significant learning curve with unique challenges:

Diagnostic Skills

Learning to diagnose issues with ATVs, scooters, and dirt bikes required developing:

  • Systematic troubleshooting approaches
  • Understanding of engine mechanics
  • Electrical system diagnostics
  • Carburetor tuning and adjustment
  • Brake system repair and maintenance

Customer Communication

Explaining technical issues and repair procedures to customers was something that took considerable time to master. I learned to:

  • Translate technical jargon into understandable language
  • Provide clear repair estimates and timelines
  • Explain preventive maintenance importance
  • Guide customers through DIY adjustments over the phone
  • Set realistic expectations for repair outcomes

Hands-On Service Experience

Performing actual service on powersports units was fairly straightforward once I understood the fundamentals:

  • Oil changes and fluid maintenance
  • Brake adjustments and replacements
  • Carburetor cleaning and rebuilding
  • Electrical troubleshooting and repair
  • Tire mounting and balancing
  • Chain adjustment and replacement

The machines don't have a whole lot of moving parts compared to automobiles, which makes service work manageable with proper training. I received excellent instruction from all the other technicians, who were patient and thorough in teaching proper procedures.

Most Valuable Skill: Patience

Learning patience with difficult customers has been my greatest improvement and the most valuable skill I take away from this position for future careers. Not every customer interaction is easy, but developing the ability to:

  • Remain calm under pressure
  • Listen to frustrated customers without becoming defensive
  • Find solutions to complex problems
  • Communicate clearly even in stressful situations
  • Maintain professionalism regardless of circumstances

These skills are transferable to any career and any industry.

Moving Forward: New Opportunities

Unfortunately, this reflection comes after submitting my two-week notice for leaving my position at Q9 PowerSports USA. However, this departure represents an exciting new chapter rather than an ending.

Career Advancement

Thanks to the communication skills I gained and the strong business ethic I developed at Q9 PowerSports USA, I've been hired for a career position with the federal government that offers major overtime opportunities and long-term stability.

Skills That Transfer

Although I will no longer be working in the powersports industry, the skills and experience I gained throughout this job will serve me well throughout my career:

  • Technical aptitude: Ability to learn complex systems quickly
  • Customer service excellence: Professional communication skills
  • Problem-solving: Systematic approach to challenges
  • Attention to detail: Quality-focused work habits
  • Patience and professionalism: Handling difficult situations gracefully
  • Work ethic: Commitment to excellence and continuous improvement

Gratitude and Best Wishes

I will miss everyone I have worked with over the years at Q9 PowerSports USA. The team environment, the mentorship from experienced colleagues, and the opportunity to grow from janitor to technician has been an incredible journey.

I wish everybody at Q9 PowerSports USA the very best as they continue to provide affordable, quality powersports vehicles to families across America.

Lessons for Job Seekers

For anyone considering a career in the powersports industry or looking for their first job, my experience demonstrates several important principles:

  • Start anywhere: Even entry-level positions offer learning opportunities
  • Be observant: Learn from everyone around you
  • Show initiative: Express interest in advancement
  • Master each role: Build expertise before moving up
  • Embrace challenges: Growth happens outside your comfort zone
  • Value mentorship: Learn from experienced colleagues
  • Develop transferable skills: Every job teaches valuable lessons

Q9 PowerSports USA provided me with an exceptional foundation for my career, and I'm grateful for every opportunity I received during my five years with the company.
