How to Winterize a Motorcycle for Storage

Winter can be a tough season for motorcycles. Cold temperatures, moisture, and road salt can cause damage if proper precautions are not taken. To ensure your motorcycle stays in good condition during the winter months, follow these steps to winterize it for storage:

  1. Wash and Clean

Start by giving your motorcycle a thorough wash and clean. Remove any dirt, grime, or bugs from the surface. Dry it off completely to prevent moisture from causing rust.

  2. Change the Oil

Next, change the oil and filter. Used oil contains contaminants that can damage the engine if left sitting for a long time. Fresh oil will help protect the internal components.

  3. Stabilize the Fuel

Fill up the fuel tank and add a fuel stabilizer to prevent the gasoline from deteriorating. Run the engine for a few minutes to ensure the stabilizer circulates throughout the fuel system.

  4. Disconnect the Battery

If you're storing your motorcycle for an extended period, it's best to disconnect the battery. This prevents it from draining and potentially freezing during cold temperatures. Store the battery in a cool, dry place.

  5. Protect the Tires

Inflate the tires to the recommended pressure and consider using a motorcycle stand or paddock stand to take the weight off the tires. This helps prevent flat spots from forming during storage.

  6. Cover It Up

Lastly, invest in a high-quality motorcycle cover to protect your bike from dust, moisture, and other elements. Choose a cover that fits properly and is made of breathable material to prevent condensation.

By following these steps, you'll be able to winterize your motorcycle effectively and ensure it stays in great condition until spring arrives. When the warmer weather returns, you'll be ready to hit the road again!
